How it is calculated

e-Okul is MEB’s system where schools record grades and attendance; this calculator works the term grade out with the regulation’s formula. In high school, art. 51 of the Secondary Schools Regulation makes a course’s term grade the arithmetic mean of the exam scores, the performance scores and the project score if there is one. Under art. 45(1)(a), as amended on 8 September 2023, each course has 2 written exams a term (a third in courses of 6+ hours a week if the provincial subject group decides), and art. 50(8), as amended on 22 February 2025, gives 2 performance scores per course per term: one for a performance assignment, the other for unit tasks, reading, preparation, attendance, participation and conduct. In middle school, art. 27 of the Primary Schools Regulation combines exams, class-activity scores and the project with their own weights and rounds the result to a whole number. The high-school scale (art. 44): 85.00–100 pekiyi, 70.00–84.99 iyi, 60.00–69.99 orta, 50.00–59.99 geçer, 0–49.99 geçmez. Middle school has no five-band scale: 70.00 or more is a pass in Turkish and 50.00 or more in other courses (art. 21).

FormulaHigh school: term grade = (exams + performance scores + project, if any) ÷ number of scores · Middle school: term grade = [exam 1 + exam 2 + (activity mean + project mean) ÷ 2] ÷ 3, halves rounded upEvery score is out of 100. In high school each course gets 2 written exams and 2 performance scores a term; in middle school 2 exams and 2 class-activity scores in courses of 2 hours a week or less, 3 in longer ones. A project is entered only in the course the student did it in; without one, the middle-school activity mean is used on its own.
  1. Choose the school level and the course’s weekly hours; in middle school, say whether the course is Turkish.
  2. High school: every exam, performance and project score is added up and divided by the number of scores (art. 51). The division is carried to 4 decimals; the grade is not rounded.
  3. Middle school: the activity scores are averaged; if there is a project, that mean is added to the project mean and halved. The result is added to the two exam scores, divided by three, and halves round up to the next whole number (art. 27).
  4. In high school the term grade is placed on the scale (pekiyi, iyi, orta, geçer, geçmez); in middle school it is compared with the pass mark.

Example

High school, exams 78 and 85, performance 90 and 95, no project: (78 + 85 + 90 + 95) ÷ 4 = 87.00 → Pekiyi. Middle school, exams 78 and 85, three activity scores 90, 95 and 85, no project: activity mean 90; (78 + 85 + 90) ÷ 3 = 84.3333 → 84, a pass.

Frequently asked questions

How is a high-school term grade worked out?

Under art. 51 of the Secondary Schools Regulation it is the arithmetic mean of the term’s exam scores, performance scores and project score, if any. Each score counts once: with two exams, two performance scores and a project, the five are added and divided by five. The division is carried to 4 decimals.

Does an oral grade count?

The current regulations have no separate oral grade. In high school, preparation, participation and conduct go into the second performance score (art. 50(8)); in middle school, into the class-activity scores (art. 22(3)).

Does 45–49 pass with a carried-over course in high school?

No, there is no such band. A course is passed for the year when the mean of the two term grades is at least 50, or the second-term grade at least 70 (art. 56). Moving up with carried-over courses depends on how many courses were failed and on the year-end success score: with that score at least 50, a student moves up carrying at most 3 failed courses (art. 58).

What if I miss an exam or do not hand in a task?

A high-school student who misses an exam or task without a valid excuse gets “G”, one caught cheating “K”, and the mark still counts in the mean (art. 48(4)); in middle school the exam and project count stays full and an unsubmitted project is zero (arts. 22, 23). Enter 0 for it. A student with an accepted excuse sits a make-up.

How is a middle-school grade worked out in a course without a project?

A project is done in at least 1 course of the student’s choice each year (art. 22(2)), and art. 20(4) counts it only “if any”. In a course without one, the activity mean is added to the two exam scores and divided by three.

What about a middle-school course with a third exam?

Art. 5(1)(c) of the Measurement and Evaluation Regulation allows a third exam in courses of 6 or more hours a week if the provincial subject group decides, but art. 27(2)(a) of the Primary Schools Regulation defines the term grade with the first and second exams only and does not say how a third would count. The calculator therefore uses two exams for middle school.

Is the term grade enough for an honours certificate?

No; the certificates look at the mean of all courses weighted by weekly hours, not one course. In high school a student who passed every course with a conduct score of 100 gets teşekkür with a weighted mean from 70.00 up to, but not including, 85.00, and takdir from 85.00 (art. 160); in middle school the same thresholds apply provided no Turkish grade is under 70.00 and no other under 50.00 (art. 53).
