High School Course Year-End Score Calculator

Enter a course’s two term grades to get its year-end score under Türkiye’s Secondary Schools Regulation, whether the course is passed, the lowest second-term grade that is enough, and the result of a make-up (sorumluluk) exam. The middle-school year-end score under the Primary Schools Regulation is available too.

If not known yet, enter an estimate; the result also shows the lowest grade that is enough.

Only if you failed the course and sat its make-up exam. Otherwise leave empty.

How it is calculated

In high school each course gets one grade per term (Secondary Schools Regulation art. 51(3)), and the course’s year-end score is the arithmetic mean of the two term grades (art. 53(1)(a)). That is one course’s score; the mean of all courses’ year-end scores weighted by weekly hours is a separate figure, the year-end success score (arts. 54, 55), used for moving up and for the graduation score. A course is passed for the year when the mean of the two term grades is at least 50, or when the second-term grade is at least 70 whatever the first was (art. 56(1)(a)). If a failed course is the only one and the year-end success score is at least 50, the student moves up directly (art. 57(1)(b), as amended on 8 September 2023); otherwise the course is cleared by a make-up (sorumluluk) exam with at least 50 (art. 58(4)). In middle school, art. 27(3)(a) of the Primary Schools Regulation also defines the year-end score as the mean of the two term grades, but rounds halves up to a whole number; 70.00 or more passes in Turkish and 50.00 or more in other courses (art. 21(1)), and below that the class teachers’ board decides (art. 31(2)(b)).

FormulaHigh school: year-end score = (term 1 + term 2) ÷ 2; passed if it is ≥ 50 or term 2 ≥ 70 · After a make-up exam: (year-end score + exam score) ÷ 2 · Middle school: year-end score = (term 1 + term 2) ÷ 2, halves rounded upTerm grades are out of 100; in high school they carry 4 decimals, in middle school they are whole numbers. If you do not know a term grade, work it out first with the e-Okul term grade calculator. A make-up exam score applies only in high school, to a failed course.
  1. Choose the school level and enter both term grades (in middle school, also say whether the course is Turkish).
  2. In high school the two term grades are added and halved; the division is carried to 4 decimals and not rounded (arts. 53(1)(a), 53(2)).
  3. The course is passed if the year-end score is at least 50, or if the second-term grade is at least 70 whatever the first term was (art. 56(1)(a)). The lowest second-term grade that passes is the smaller of the two.
  4. After a make-up exam for a failed course, the new year-end score is the mean of the old one and the exam score (art. 53(1)(d)); the course is cleared with at least 50 in the exam (art. 58(4)).
  5. In middle school the mean is rounded to a whole number, halves up (art. 27(3)(a)), and compared with 70 in Turkish and 50 in other courses (arts. 21(1), 31(2)(b)). If the unrounded mean is under the mark but the rounded score reaches it (e.g. 69.5 → 70), the calculator shows a warning pointing to art. 28(2)’s wording, “the arithmetic mean of the two term grades”.

Example

High school, term grades 45 and 62: (45 + 62) ÷ 2 = 53.5 → passed; 100 − 45 = 55 in the second term would have been enough. Terms 25 and 72: mean 48.5, but the second term is over 70 → passed. Terms 30 and 60: mean 45 → failed; 58 in the make-up exam clears it, and the new year-end score is (45 + 58) ÷ 2 = 51.5. Middle-school Turkish, 69 and 70: mean 69.5 → year-end score 70.

Frequently asked questions

How is a high-school course’s year-end score worked out?

The first- and second-term grades are added and divided by two (Secondary Schools Regulation art. 53(1)(a)). The division is carried to 4 decimals (art. 53(2)); the score is not rounded.

Do I pass with 70 in the second term?

Yes. Under art. 56(1)(a) a second-term grade of at least 70 passes the course whatever the first term was, even if the two-term mean is under 50. So the second-term grade you need is never above 70.

Does a year-end score of 45–49 mean passing with a carried-over course?

No, the regulation has no such band. A course is either passed under art. 56 or failed. A failed course does not stop you moving up if it is your only one and your year-end success score is at least 50 (art. 57(1)(b)); for a course that score cannot make up, you move up owing it (art. 57(2)). With more failed courses and that score at least 50, you move up owing at most 3; more than 6 failed courses in total, earlier grades included, means repeating the year (art. 58(1)).

What happens to the year-end score after a make-up exam?

The course’s year-end score becomes the mean of its old year-end score and the make-up exam score (art. 53(1)(d)). Clearing the course, though, depends on the exam score alone: at least 50 is enough (art. 58(4)). Make-up exams are held in the first two weeks of the first term and the first and last two weeks of the second term (art. 58(2)(a)).

Is the year-end score the same as the year-end success score?

No. The year-end score is one course’s two-term mean (art. 53). The year-end success score multiplies each course’s year-end score by its weekly hours, adds them and divides by the total hours (arts. 54, 55), and it is the basis of the graduation score (art. 55(2)).

What if one term grade is missing?

Where no term grade could be formed (no teacher, a natural disaster and similar), a catch-up programme is run (art. 61(1)(a)); the year-end score is then the mean of the existing term grade and the catch-up score, or the catch-up score alone if both terms are missing (art. 53(1)(b)). The calculator has no separate mode for this: enter the catch-up score in place of the missing term.

What if I fail a middle-school course?

Middle school has no make-up exams. If the Turkish year-end score is under 70.00, any other under 50.00, or there are 20 or more unexcused days, the class teachers’ board decides in the last week of the second term whether the student moves up or repeats; a student moved up by the board keeps the same grades (Primary Schools Regulation art. 31(2)(b)–(c)).
