How it is calculated
Turkey has no general YÖK rule of “40% midterm + 60% final” for university courses. The weights come from each university’s own undergraduate regulation and the course syllabus: at Ankara University the course score is 40% of the in-term grade plus 60% of the final or make-up exam (art. 35/3); the final weighs 40%–60% at Hacettepe (art. 23/1), 50%–70% at Istanbul University (art. 20/4), 40%–60% at İTÜ (art. 23/6) and 30%–60% at Marmara (art. 23/2); at METU and Boğaziçi the instructor announces the weights at the start of term (METU art. 25/3, Boğaziçi art. 22/3-4). The letter also depends on the university: the Hacettepe regulation prints each letter’s score band; Ankara (art. 35/4: exams are assessed on absolute or relative criteria), Gazi and Istanbul give bands for absolute grading, and at METU the instructor awards the letter (art. 26/2) with the table giving score equivalents; there the letter shown is an estimate that holds under absolute grading; the Boğaziçi, İTÜ and Marmara regulations give none, and the letter comes from relative grading (the class mean and distribution) or the instructor’s criteria. The calculator therefore shows a letter only where bands exist. Some regulations also set a minimum final score: 50.00 at Ankara (arts. 37/2, 37/4), at least 50 at Hacettepe (art. 23/1) and at least 40 at Istanbul (art. 21/4). For a two-part (midterm + final) course see the midterm-final calculator; this one takes any number of parts. High and middle schools have no midterm/final weighting: under the MEB Secondary Schools Regulation each course has two written exams a term (art. 45/1-a) and two performance scores (art. 50/8), the term score is their plain mean (art. 51/1), and 50 passes (art. 44/2). For school grades use the e-Okul term grade and high-school course score calculators.
Course score = Σ (score × weight) ÷ 100 · Score needed = (target − points earned) ÷ weight left × 100Score: the assessment’s mark out of 100 · Weight: the percentage the syllabus gives it · Weight left: 100 − the weights entered (assessments not graded yet) · Target: the course score you aim for; empty means the lower bound of the passing letter.- Put each graded assessment’s score on a line and its weight (%) in the second list, in the same order.
- Weights are not rescaled: enter the syllabus percentages. If they add up to 100 the course score is computed; under 100 the missing share is the assessment still to come (usually the final); over 100 is an error.
- Each score is multiplied by its weight, divided by 100 and added up: the points earned towards the course score so far.
- Score needed on the rest = (target − points earned) ÷ weight left × 100. Below 0 the target is secured; above 100 it is out of reach.
- With a university picked, the letter is read from the regulation’s score bands and the table shows the score needed for each letter; where the regulation gives no bands (curve grading) only the score is shown.
- If the regulation sets a minimum final score (e.g. Ankara, Hacettepe, Istanbul) and what is left is the final, the score needed cannot be below it.
Example
Quiz 80 (10%), homework 65 (30%), lab 90 (20%), final still to come (40%). Points earned: 80 × 0.10 + 65 × 0.30 + 90 × 0.20 = 8 + 19.5 + 18 = 45.5. The weighted mean of the scores entered is 45.5 ÷ 60 × 100 = 75.83. At Hacettepe the lowest passing grade is D, from 50; the final needed is (50 − 45.5) ÷ 40 × 100 = 11.25. But the regulation also requires at least 50 in the final, and a final under that fails the course whatever its score, so at least 50 is needed.
Frequently asked questions
Must the weights add up to 100?
All of a course’s assessments together make up 100% of the course score, so the calculator does not rescale the weights. If they add up to less than 100, the gap is the assessment not graded yet and the score needed on it is computed; over 100 means a weight is wrong. The “weighted mean of the scores entered” row is only the mean of what you entered (Σ score × weight ÷ Σ weight), not the course score.
What do I need in the final to pass?
Enter every score except the final, with its weight; the final’s weight is what is missing from 100. Leave the target empty and pick your university, and the calculator aims at the lower bound of the lowest passing letter in the regulation. If the regulation sets a minimum final score, the score needed cannot be below it; the calculator shows that on its own row. Under relative grading the pass line depends on the class distribution, so no exact number can be given in advance.
How is my letter set under relative grading?
On a curve the letter depends on where your score sits in the class mean and distribution, so the cut-offs change from term to term and course to course. The Istanbul University regulation, for example, says that under relative grading the grade follows the mean and statistical distribution of raw scores (art. 21/2), and İTÜ’s that success is set with the class’s overall level in view (art. 20/1). For such cases the calculator shows no letter; it gives the course score and the score needed for a target.
What if my score falls between two bands (e.g. 84.5)?
The bands in the regulations are whole numbers (80–84, 85–89…). The calculator places a fractional score in the highest letter whose lower bound it reaches: 84.5 stays in the lower letter. Istanbul University rounds fractional scores to the nearest whole number under absolute grading (art. 20/2), and the calculator rounds before the letter there. For other universities, check the rounding rule in your regulation and student information system.
Can I use this for high-school grades?
No. High schools have no weighted midterm/final calculation: a course’s term score is the plain mean of the written exam, performance and any project scores (Secondary Schools Regulation art. 51/1), and 50 passes (art. 44/2). Use the e-Okul term grade and high-school course score calculators instead.
What changes with a make-up exam?
In most regulations the make-up score replaces the final and is combined with the in-term grades at the same weight (e.g. Ankara art. 29/1-b, Hacettepe art. 23/3). Leave the final out to see what you need in the make-up, or type the make-up score in place of the final. At Istanbul University, if the make-up grade is lower than the final’s, the final’s grade stands (art. 26/2).
