Midterm and Final Grade Calculator

Enter your midterm (in-term) grade and the final’s weight to get your course score, its letter, and the lowest final score you need to pass or reach a target. Pick your university and the pass mark, final minimum and letter bands come from its own regulation.

Last updated:

Pass mark, final minimum and letter bands from the chosen university’s regulation.

With several midterms, homework or quizzes, enter the in-term grade combined with the syllabus weights.

The in-term work weighs the rest of 100. It is in the course syllabus; there is no rate for every university.

Leave empty to get the lowest final score that reaches the target.

Empty: the chosen regulation’s pass mark.

Empty: the regulation’s floor, if any. If your course sets a higher one, enter it.

How it is calculated

In Turkey, YÖK (the Council of Higher Education) sets no single rule for every university on the weights of the midterm and final, the pass mark or a minimum final score; “40% midterm, 60% final” is only a common practice. Each university sets them in its own undergraduate regulation, and often leaves them to the course syllabus: Ankara University fixes the final at 60% and requires at least 50 in it; at Hacettepe the final weighs 40% to 60% and its minimum cannot be under 50; at Istanbul University the final weighs 50% to 70% and needs at least 40; Marmara allows 30% to 60% and İTÜ 40% to 60%; METU and Boğaziçi leave the weights to the instructor. Letters differ too: some regulations print each letter’s score band, some only for absolute grading, and İTÜ, Boğaziçi and Marmara print none (the letter is usually set on a curve, by the class distribution). Then the calculator gives only the course score and does not guess a letter.

FormulaCourse score = midterm × (1 − final weight) + final × final weight · Final needed = (target − midterm × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weightMidterm: the in-term grade (combined with the syllabus weights if there are several midterms, homework or quizzes) · Final weight: the final’s (or make-up’s) share of the course score · Target: the pass mark or the score you aim for. The final needed never goes below the regulation’s or the course’s final minimum.
  1. Pick your university or “None”. If the regulation limits the final’s weight and yours is outside the limit, a warning shows.
  2. Enter your midterm grade and the final’s weight (it is in the course syllabus).
  3. With a final score, the course score is midterm × in-term weight + final × final weight; where the regulation prints score bands, the letter and pass status are shown.
  4. With the final left empty, the final needed for the target is (target − midterm × in-term weight) ÷ final weight, rounded up to two decimals. An empty target means the lower bound of the passing letter’s band (at Ankara it equals the course-score limit of art. 37/4).
  5. If the regulation sets a minimum final score (50 at Ankara, for example), the final needed never goes below it; a final under it fails the course whatever the course score.
  6. The letter table shows the lowest final for each letter; above 100 it is out of reach.

Example

Ankara University (40% in-term, 60% final; final at least 50; pass 60), midterm 55: 55 × 0.40 = 22. To pass: (60 − 22) ÷ 0.60 = 63.33… → a final of at least 63.34. A final of 80 gives 22 + 80 × 0.60 = 22 + 48 = 70 → C1. With midterm 90 and final 45 the course score is 36 + 27 = 63, but the final is under 50, so the course fails with F2. At Istanbul University (absolute grading, score rounded to a whole number, CC 60), midterm 50 and a 60% final: (59.5 − 20) ÷ 0.60 = 65.83… → at least 65.84; 20 + 65.84 × 0.60 = 59.504 → 60 → CC.

Frequently asked questions

Is 40% midterm, 60% final a YÖK rule?

No. Each university’s regulation sets the weights and they differ: Ankara fixes the final at 60%, Hacettepe and İTÜ allow 40%–60%, Istanbul 50%–70%, Marmara 30%–60%, and METU and Boğaziçi leave it to the instructor. Your course’s share is in its syllabus (course information package, syllabus form).

What do I need on the final?

Leave the final empty: the calculator works out (target − midterm × in-term weight) ÷ final weight and respects the regulation’s final minimum. At Ankara University, for example, a midterm of 55 needs at least 63.34 on the final to pass. Above 100 the target cannot be reached with the final; a make-up exam is scored the same way.

My course score passes but my final is low. Can I still fail?

At some universities, yes. At Ankara University a final, make-up or single-course exam score of 49.99 or less gets F2 (art. 37/2); at Hacettepe the minimum final score cannot be below 50 (art. 23/1); at Istanbul University a final under 40 fails the course (art. 21/4); at Marmara a final under the unit’s floor (at least 35) on a curve, or under 50 with direct conversion, fails it (art. 23/6). Your course may have raised the floor; enter the syllabus value in the “final minimum” field.

Does the make-up exam replace the final?

Usually yes, combined with the in-term grade at the same weight: at Ankara the make-up score counts as the final score (art. 29/1-b), at Hacettepe it is combined with the in-term work (art. 23/3). At Istanbul University, if the make-up grade is lower than the final’s, the final’s grade stands (art. 26/2). Enter your make-up score in the final field.

Why is no letter shown?

The İTÜ, Boğaziçi and Marmara regulations print no score bands; the course’s assessment, often a curve over the class distribution, sets the letter. Gazi and Istanbul University give bands only for absolute grading; at Ankara exams are assessed on absolute or relative criteria (art. 35/4); at METU the instructor awards the letter (art. 26/2-3) and the table gives the score equivalents. At these universities the letter shown is an estimate that holds under absolute grading; on a curve, or where the instructor awards the letter, it may differ. Outside Ankara, the “pass mark” used is the lower bound of the passing letter’s band.

What is a conditional pass?

In some regulations the low passing letters pass on an average condition. At Gazi, DC and DD pass when the term/year average is at least 2.00 (art. 16/7); at Istanbul University DC and DD are conditional passes needing a graduation AGNO of at least 2.00 (art. 21/8-b); at İTÜ DC+, DC, DD+ and DD are conditional passes (art. 20/2-b). You can work out your average with the University GPA calculator.

Does this apply to high school?

No, this calculator is for university courses. In high school a course’s term score is the arithmetic mean of the exam scores, the performance-work scores and any project score (Secondary Schools Regulation art. 51/1); there is no midterm/final weighting. For high school, use the High School Course Score and E-Okul calculators.
