Takdir / Teşekkür Certificate Calculator

Enter the courses’ term grades and weekly hours, absences and any disciplinary penalty to see whether a student gets the takdir or teşekkür certificate, checking every condition of art. 160 of Türkiye’s Secondary Schools Regulation (high school) or art. 53 of the Primary Schools Regulation (middle school).

How it is calculated

The takdir and teşekkür certificates go by the weighted mean of the term grades (high school art. 160(1), middle school art. 53(1)), not by the year-end success score. In high school, art. 159 of the Secondary Schools Regulation lists four award certificates: teşekkür, takdir, onur and üstün başarı. Under art. 160(1) the school’s student awards and discipline board gives students who passed every course, whose weighted mean of term grades is not under 70.00 and whose behaviour score is 100, a teşekkür for a mean of 70.00–84.99 and a takdir for 85.00 or more; a student with takdir in every term of at least 3 school years of secondary education earns the üstün başarı certificate. The amendment of 8 September 2023 removed the article’s “no more than 5 days of unexcused absence” condition; absence now counts through art. 36(5): a student over 10 unexcused or 30 total days fails whatever the grades (art. 36(5)(a)), and one who reaches those limits gets no teşekkür, takdir, onur or üstün başarı certificate either (art. 36(5)(b); total 40 days after losing a first-degree relative, 60 for long-term or in-patient treatment, care orders and detention). Special-education students in full-time inclusion and students of special-education vocational schools are left out of that sentence; for them, going over 20 unexcused or 70 total days means failing (art. 36(5)(a)–(b)). The behaviour score is 100 at the start of every school year; a reprimand takes 10 points off, a short suspension 20 and a school transfer 40 (art. 170). The onur certificate is for exemplary conduct, with no grade requirement (art. 161). In middle schools and imam-hatip middle schools, art. 53(1) of the Primary Schools Regulation asks for a Turkish term grade of at least 70.00, at least 50.00 in every other course, and a weighted mean of all term grades of 70.00–84.99 (teşekkür) or 85.00 and more (takdir). A student given a reprimand or a school transfer gets no certificate that school year (art. 56(10)); a warning does not count. Since the amendment of 28 July 2026, students with 20 or more unexcused days who are promoted by decision of the class teachers’ board get no certificate either (art. 53(4)); as the board decides in the last week of the second term (art. 31(2)(b)), the calculator applies this to the second-term (year-end) certificate. Certificates are handed out with the report card (art. 53(3)). The regulation sets these certificates for middle-school and imam-hatip middle-school students (art. 53(1)); middle school has no üstün başarı certificate.

FormulaMean = Σ(course term grade × weekly hours) ÷ Σ weekly hours · if every condition holds: mean from 70 to under 85 → teşekkür, 85 or more → takdirA term grade is the course’s grade for that term (as in e-Okul). A course’s weight is its weekly hours (high school art. 54(1), middle school art. 27(4)); the division is carried to 4 decimals. In high school, art. 160(1) asks for every course passed (a term grade of 50 or more; 0–49.99 is “Geçmez”, fail, in art. 44(2)), a weighted mean of at least 70 and a behaviour score of 100. In middle school, art. 53(1) asks for a Turkish term grade of at least 70.00, at least 50.00 in every other course and a weighted mean of at least 70.00.
  1. Choose the school level. In high school enter every course’s term grade and weekly hours in the same order, one per line; in middle school enter Turkish separately and the other courses in the lists.
  2. Each term grade is multiplied by the course’s weekly hours; the products are added up and divided by the total hours.
  3. Each course is checked against its floor: 50 in high school; 70 for Turkish and 50 for the rest in middle school.
  4. Behaviour and attendance are checked: in high school a behaviour score of 100 and absences that have not reached the limit (normally 10 unexcused, 30 days in all); in middle school no reprimand or school transfer and, in the second term (year end), fewer than 20 unexcused days.
  5. With every condition met, a mean of 85 or more gives takdir and a mean from 70 to under 85 gives teşekkür; for high school the üstün başarı certificate is shown too.

Example

High school, eight courses: term grades 86.5, 92, 78, 88, 90, 81, 95, 100 with weekly hours 5, 6, 4, 2, 4, 2, 2, 2. Weighted scores 432.5 + 552 + 312 + 176 + 360 + 162 + 190 + 200 = 2,384.5; total hours 27; mean = 2,384.5 ÷ 27 = 88.3148. Every course is over 50, the behaviour score is 100 and absences are within the limit: takdir. Had the student been reprimanded, the behaviour score would drop to 90 and no certificate would be given.

Frequently asked questions

What mean does takdir need?

In both high school and middle school, the hour-weighted mean of the term grades must be 85.00 or more; 70.00–84.99 is enough for teşekkür (high school art. 160(1), middle school art. 53(1)). The mean alone is not enough: the other conditions must hold too.

Why is the mean weighted by hours?

The regulations say “weighted mean” and define a course’s weight as its weekly hours (high school art. 54(1), middle school art. 27(4)). A 6-hour course counts three times as much as a 2-hour one; a plain average can give a different answer.

I failed one course but my mean is 90. Do I get a certificate?

No. In high school every course must be passed (art. 160(1)); a term grade under 50 rules it out. In middle school Turkish must not be under 70 and the other courses not under 50 (art. 53(1)). There is no “nothing under 45” rule in the regulation.

Does a disciplinary penalty rule out a certificate?

In high school every penalty lowers the behaviour score (a reprimand by 10, art. 170(2)) and a certificate needs a score of 100 (art. 160(1)); if the penalty is lifted and the points returned (art. 171(2)) the bar goes. In middle school a reprimand or a school transfer bars the certificate for that school year; a warning does not (art. 56(10)).

Do absences matter?

In high school there has been no separate “5 days” condition since 2023, but a student over 10 unexcused or 30 total days fails (art. 36(5)(a)), and one who reaches those limits gets no certificate (art. 36(5)(b)). In middle school, 20 or more unexcused days put promotion to a board decision in the last week of the second term, and students promoted that way get no certificate (arts. 31(2)(b), 53(4)).

How is the üstün başarı certificate earned?

Only in high school: a student with takdir in every term of at least 3 school years of secondary education earns it (art. 160(1)(c)). A single teşekkür term means that year does not count.
