How it is calculated
At school, a “grade average” usually means the mean of all courses in one term. The MEB regulations use that mean for honours certificates and weight it by weekly hours. In high school, the school’s awards and discipline board gives students who passed every course, whose weighted mean of term grades is not below 70.00 and whose behaviour score is 100 a teşekkür (thanks) certificate below 85.00 and a takdir (commendation) certificate from 85.00; takdir in every term of at least 3 school years earns the üstün başarı (high achievement) certificate (Secondary Schools Regulation art. 160(1)). In middle school and imam-hatip middle school, with at least 70.00 in Turkish and 50.00 in every other course, a weighted term mean from 70.00 up to (not including) 85.00 earns teşekkür and 85.00 or more takdir; a student moved up by board decision after 20 or more unexcused days gets no certificate (Primary Schools Regulation art. 53(1), (4)). The regulations define a course’s weight as its weekly hours (high school art. 54(1); middle-school weighted score art. 27(4)); this tool applies the same weight and the four-decimal rule of arts. 55(1) and 28(1) to the term mean. This page gives one term’s mean only: the year-end success score, built from both terms and used for promotion and the graduation score, is a separate calculation (high school art. 55, middle school art. 28).
Term mean = Σ(course term grade × weekly hours) ÷ Σ weekly hoursGrades are out of 100. A course’s weight is its number of weekly hours (high school art. 54(1)); grade times hours is its weighted grade (high school art. 54(2), middle school art. 27(4)). The division is carried to 4 decimals and not rounded (the rule of high school art. 55(1), middle school art. 28(1)). In middle school a course’s term grade is a whole number, halves and more rounded up (art. 27(2)(b)); in high school it keeps its decimals.- Choose the school level and enter the term grades of one term and the weekly hours in the same order, one per line. In middle school, also give the row of Turkish.
- Each term grade is multiplied by the course’s weekly hours and the weighted grades are added up.
- The sum is divided by the total weekly hours, carried to 4 decimals.
- The certificate band of the mean (high school art. 160(1), middle school art. 53(1)), the points short of the next band and the number of courses under the pass mark are shown for information.
Example
High school, eight courses: term grades 72, 88.5, 65, 91, 80, 77, 95, 84 with weekly hours 5, 4, 2, 2, 4, 2, 2, 2. Weighted grades 360 + 354 + 130 + 182 + 320 + 154 + 190 + 168 = 1,858; total hours 23; mean = 1,858 ÷ 23 = 80.7826 (cut at four decimals). That is in the teşekkür band, 4.2174 points short of takdir. The unweighted mean would be 81.5625.
Frequently asked questions
Is the term mean the same as the year-end success score?
No. The term mean is one term’s course grades weighted by hours, and the teşekkür and takdir certificates go by it (high school art. 160(1), middle school art. 53(1)). The year-end success score is built from each course’s year grade, the mean of its two terms (high school arts. 53–55, middle school arts. 27(3)–28), and is used for promotion and the graduation score. The Year-End Success Score calculator works that out.
What mean is needed for teşekkür and takdir?
A weighted term mean from 70.00 up to (not including) 85.00 gives teşekkür, 85.00 or more takdir; the bands are the same in high and middle school. The mean is not the only condition: high school also needs every course passed and a behaviour score of 100 (art. 160(1)); middle school at least 70.00 in Turkish and 50.00 in every other course (art. 53(1)). There is no “no grade under 45” rule in the current regulations.
Why a weighted mean rather than a simple one?
The regulations define certificates by “the weighted mean of the term grades” (high school art. 160(1)) and “the term weighted score mean” (middle school art. 53(1)); a course’s weight is its weekly hours (high school art. 54(1)). A course taught 5 hours a week counts two and a half times as much as a 2-hour one. The tool also shows the unweighted mean for comparison, but the certificate bands apply to the weighted one.
Does a mean just under the takdir mark round up?
The regulations do not say how many decimals the weighted term mean is worked to. The calculator applies, by analogy, the rule set for the year-end success score (the division carried to 4 decimals, high school art. 55(1), middle school art. 28(1)) to the term mean too, and does not round it. As takdir is for “85.00 and above” (high school art. 160(1)(b)), a mean one ten-thousandth under the mark stays in the teşekkür band in this calculation.
Why must middle-school grades be whole numbers?
Art. 27(2)(b) of the Primary Schools Regulation counts halves and more as the next whole mark when the term grade is worked out, so middle-school term grades in e-Okul are whole numbers. The mean itself is not rounded. To work out one course’s term grade from its exam and activity scores, use the E-Okul Term Grade calculator.
How is the üstün başarı certificate earned?
In high school, a student who earns takdir in every term of at least 3 school years receives the üstün başarı certificate (art. 160(1)(c)). Each term’s mean must therefore be 85.00 or more on its own, with the other conditions met.
