How it is calculated

A percentage says how many parts out of 100 an amount is, which puts two numbers on a common scale. The most common mistake is mixing up the base: an increase or decrease is always measured against the old (starting) value, so a price that rises 20% and then falls 20% does not end where it began. This calculator is for plain percentages; for prices with or without Turkish VAT (KDV) use the VAT calculator, which has the current rates, and for margins the profit calculator.

FormulaA × B ÷ 100 · A ÷ B × 100 · (n − o) ÷ o × 100 · A × (1 ± B ÷ 100)A, B: the numbers you enter · o: old value · n: new value. Per cent means “out of a hundred”: 15% = 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15. In order: B% of A, A as a share of B, percentage change, adding and taking off a percentage.
  1. Choose what to calculate; the calculator asks for the numbers it needs.
  2. Type the percentage as a plain number (15 for 15%).
  3. To work back from a raised or discounted price, divide by the multiplier rather than adding the percentage back: 1,150 ÷ 1.15 = 1,000.

Example

15% of 250: 250 × 15 ÷ 100 = 37.5. 32 right out of 40 questions: 32 ÷ 40 × 100 = 80%. A price rising from ₺80 to ₺100 is up (100 − 80) ÷ 80 × 100 = 25%. 25% off a ₺750 item: 750 × (1 − 0.25) = ₺562.50.

Frequently asked questions

Does a 50% rise followed by a 50% cut restore the price?

No. A 50% rise takes ₺100 to ₺150; 50% off ₺150 leaves ₺75. The second percentage applies to a bigger base (150), so the result ends below ₺100.

How do I find the price before a discount?

Divide the sale price by (1 − the discount rate). An item sold for ₺850 after 15% off was 850 ÷ 0.85 = ₺1,000. Adding 15% to 850 (₺977.50) is wrong, because the discount was taken from 1,000, not from 850.

What is the difference between percent and percentage points?

Percentage points are the difference between two percentages; the percentage change is that difference over the old one. A rate rising from 40% to 45% is up 5 percentage points, but by (45 − 40) ÷ 40 × 100 = 12.5%.

Why is the percentage change negative?

A minus sign means a decrease. Going from 100 to 80 gives (80 − 100) ÷ 100 × 100 = −20%, a 20% drop.

Can I work out Turkish VAT (KDV) with this?

The “add a percentage” and “value before an increase” modes work the same way, but you must enter the rate yourself. For the current KDV rates, prices with and without VAT and the tax amount, use the VAT calculator.
