How it is calculated

Sunrise and sunset are when the sun’s upper edge appears on the horizon; because the atmosphere bends light, the sun is then actually about half a degree below it. In Turkey the longest day is around 21 June and the shortest around 21 December; in Istanbul daylight ranges from about 9 h 13 min to 15 h 8 min. Computed with this tool for 2026, the eastern provincial centres see the sun about 70 to 81 minutes before the western ones, depending on the season. The “sunrise” in prayer timetables is a few minutes earlier, because of Diyanet’s safety margin.

Formulacos H = (sin(−0.833°) − sin φ · sin δ) ÷ (cos φ · cos δ); Sunrise = noon − 4·H min, Sunset = noon + 4·H minφ latitude, δ the sun’s declination, H the hour angle. −0.833° is when the sun’s upper edge touches the horizon (34′ refraction + 16′ radius). Noon = 12:00 − 4 min × longitude − equation of time (UTC), then converted to local time. Twilight uses −6°, −12° and −18°.
  1. The sun’s declination and the equation of time follow NOAA’s (Meeus) formulas.
  2. Sunrise and sunset are found and refined twice with the sun recomputed at that moment.
  3. The result is converted to the place’s time zone, daylight saving included.

Frequently asked questions

What is civil twilight?

In the US Naval Observatory’s (USNO) definition, when the centre of the sun is 0–6 degrees below the horizon and ordinary outdoor work needs no artificial light. Nautical twilight (6–12°) is when the horizon can still be seen, astronomical twilight (12–18°) when the sky is not yet fully dark.

How accurate is it?

According to NOAA, these formulas are in theory good to a minute between ±72° latitude and to 10 minutes beyond; for example, the 21 June 2026 results for Istanbul and London are within a minute of USNO’s. The calculation assumes a level horizon and average atmosphere; mountains, altitude and the weather can change what you actually see by a few minutes.

What happens near the poles?

Beyond the polar circle the sun does not set in summer or rise in winter; the result then reports polar day or night. Use the coordinates option for any point.
