How it is calculated

Fajr (imsak) is true dawn, when the sky first starts to lighten: the fast begins and the dawn prayer’s time starts. Diyanet takes it as the moment the sun is 18 degrees below the horizon and has added no safety margin to it since 1983. Civil dawn (−6°) is when there is light enough to read, nautical dawn (−12°) when the horizon becomes visible; neither is a prayer time. In Ramadan the dawn call to prayer is read at fajr, in other months about an hour before sunrise.

FormulaTime = dhuhr ± H; cos H = (sin h − sin φ · sin δ) ÷ (cos φ · cos δ)φ is the latitude, δ the sun’s declination that day, h its altitude, H the hour angle (1° = 4 minutes). Dhuhr is the sun’s transit over the province’s meridian plus 5 minutes.

The sun’s declination and the equation of time are worked out for the day.
Fajr: the sun 18 degrees below the horizon; Diyanet adds no safety margin here.
Sunrise: the sun’s upper edge on the horizon, moved earlier by Diyanet’s margin; maghrib is 7 minutes after sunset.
Isha: the sun 17 degrees below the horizon.

Frequently asked questions

Are these the same as Diyanet’s calendar?

They are computed with Diyanet’s method, not copied from its tables. HerHesap checked them against the 2026–2027 times for all 81 provincial centres on namazvakitleri.diyanet.gov.tr: about 94% fall on the same minute and the rest are 1 minute off. For districts, use Diyanet’s district calendar.

When does suhur end?

Suhur ends at fajr (imsak); from that moment eating and drinking break the fast. A call to prayer read slightly early or late does not change it.

Why is the sunrise time earlier than the actual sunrise?

Diyanet applies a margin at sunrise and sunset to cover the difference between a city’s east and west and its high and low ground: the dawn prayer ends before the actual sunrise and maghrib starts 7 minutes after sunset.
