İstanbul Ramadan timetable 29

How it is calculated

In Turkey the start of Ramadan and the Eid follow Diyanet’s calendar, which counts a month from when the new crescent can be seen anywhere in the world and is announced years ahead; some countries can be a day apart. The fast starts at fajr and ends at maghrib (iftar). The Hijri year is about 11 days shorter than the solar year, so Ramadan moves 10–11 days earlier each year and the length of the fast changes with the season.

FormulaFasting time = Iftar (maghrib) − FajrFajr: the sun 18 degrees below the horizon. Iftar (maghrib): 7 minutes after sunset. Eid prayer: by a calculation fitted to the times Diyanet announces (±1 min), once the sun has risen 5 degrees.
  1. The first day of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr come from Diyanet’s published Hijri month starts; Ramadan lasts 29 or 30 days.
  2. For each day the sun’s position gives fajr and maghrib with Diyanet’s angles and margins.
  3. Laylat al-Qadr is the 27th night of Ramadan: the evening of its 26th day.
