How it is calculated

The Hijri calendar counts from the Prophet Muhammad’s emigration from Mecca to Medina and follows the Moon. A Hijri year has 354 or 355 days, about 11 fewer than a solar year, so Ramadan and the Eids move earlier every year. Months begin with the sighting of the crescent and last 29 or 30 days. In Turkey, Diyanet computes the month starts years ahead, counting a month from when the crescent can be seen anywhere in the world; other countries’ calendars (such as Saudi Arabia’s Umm al-Qura) can be a day apart.

FormulaHijri day = Gregorian date − 1st day of the Hijri month + 1Month starts come from Diyanet’s lists of religious days. Outside them the arithmetic (tabular) Hijri calendar is used (Unicode CLDR “islamic-civil”): years 2, 5, 7, 10, 13, 16, 18, 21, 24, 26 and 29 of each 30-year cycle are leap years (30-day Dhu al-Hijjah), odd months have 30 days and even months 29; the epoch is 16 July 622 (Julian).
  1. The Hijri month containing the date is found from Diyanet’s month starts.
  2. The Hijri day is the number of days since the 1st of that month, plus one.
  3. Going the other way, the day is added to the month’s 1st; day 30 is refused in a 29-day month.

Frequently asked questions

What is today’s Hijri date?

Leave the date as today to see the Hijri day, month and year on Diyanet’s calendar.

When is the Islamic New Year?

The Hijri year begins on 1 Muharram. On Diyanet’s calendar 1448 AH begins on 16 Jun 2026 and 1449 AH on 6 Jun 2027; as the Hijri year (354 or 355 days) is shorter than the solar year, it comes about 11 days earlier each year.

Which years does it cover?

For the years Diyanet has published in its lists of religious days (the first month start is 4 Jan 2022) the conversion matches Diyanet’s calendar exactly. Other dates use the arithmetic calendar and can be 1–2 days off; the result then shows a warning with the covered range.
