How it is calculated

The Moon goes round the Earth relative to the Sun in 29.53 days on average (the synodic month). At new moon it lies in the Sun’s direction and cannot be seen; about 7.4 days later, at first quarter, half of it is lit, and at full moon, about 14.8 days in, all of it. As the orbit is elliptical, the gap between phases is not fixed: with the Meeus algorithm this tool uses, from 1951 to 2032 the gap between two principal phases ranges from 6.6 to 8.2 days and the true phase instant is up to 19 hours from the one given by the mean synodic month, so rough estimates from the mean can be a day off. A Hijri month starts when the crescent can be seen, not at the new moon.

FormulaIlluminated fraction = (1 + cos i) ÷ 2i is the phase angle Sun–Moon–Earth: 180° at new moon, 0° at full moon. The instants of the principal phases come from the series in Meeus’s “Astronomical Algorithms” (mean anomalies of Moon and Sun with periodic corrections) and are turned into clock time after subtracting ΔT, the drift of Earth’s rotation.
  1. The date and time are converted to UTC.
  2. The previous and next new moon, first quarter, full moon and last quarter are computed.
  3. A day with a principal phase is named after it; otherwise the phase in between (waxing crescent, gibbous…).
  4. The Moon’s age is the time since the last new moon; the lit fraction follows from the phase angle.

Frequently asked questions

When is the next full moon?

Leave the date as today: the result shows the next full moon’s date and time and how many days are left, and the table lists every phase for the next three months.

How accurate is it?

The phase instants agree with the US Naval Observatory to within a minute from 1950 to 2030 and to about 2 minutes towards the end of the century. The lit percentage is good to ±0.2 points.

Is the full moon on the same day everywhere?

The full moon is a single instant, but it can fall on different calendar days in different time zones. Switch the clock to UTC to see the phases in universal time.
