How it is calculated
What people call the “currency tax” is the banking and insurance transactions tax (BSMV) on foreign-exchange transactions under Article 33 of Expenditure Taxes Law 6802. It is charged on the lira value of the currency sold and collected from the buyer. Selling currency to a bank carries none. Sales to exporters in an exporters’ union, to businesses with an industrial registry certificate and to borrowers repaying a foreign-currency loan at the lending bank are zero-rated.
TL karşılığı = Döviz tutarı × Kur; BSMV = TL karşılığı × Oran; Ödenecek = TL karşılığı + BSMVBanks and licensed exchange offices charge BSMV of 0.2% when they sell foreign currency, on the lira value, collected from the buyer.Example
Buying $1,000 at ₺40 costs ₺40,000 plus 0.2% BSMV of ₺80, so you pay ₺40,080: ₺40.08 per dollar.
Frequently asked questions
How much tax do I pay when buying currency?
0.2% of the lira value. The rate is set by Presidential decision; the law allows anything from zero to ten times the statutory rate.
Is there tax when I sell currency?
No. It is charged only when the bank or exchange office sells currency to you; selling your currency to them carries none.
Why is my bank’s rate different from the CBRT rate?
CBRT rates are indicative; banks set their own buying and selling rates, and the spread adds to your cost. Enter the rate your bank quotes for the most accurate result.
