Legal Deadline Calculator

Find the last day of an appeal, answer, objection or administrative action deadline under Turkish procedure (HMK, İYUK, CMK): a last day on a weekend or public holiday moves to the next working day, and a deadline ending in the judicial recess is extended.

Last updated:

The day the deadline starts (the decision is served or pronounced). That day is not counted.

Judicial recess

Deadlines do not extend in matters heard during the recess, such as maintenance, claims brought by employees, interim measures and non-contentious matters (HMK Art. 103). Administrative courts in places outside the city of their regional administrative court that have only one administrative or one tax court have no recess (İYUK Art. 61/1, 2nd sentence): choose “Does not apply” for them.

If the last day is an eve

Eves and 28 October are holidays only from 13:00 (Law 2429 Arts. 1–2); the procedural laws do not say whether that half day extends a deadline. The safe reading ends the deadline on the eve.

Administrative leave days

Administrative leave granted to public employees is not a public holiday; HMK Art. 93 counts only public holidays.

How it is calculated

Deadlines set by law are strict; missing one ends the right to act (HMK Art. 94). In civil courts, matters heard during the recess (interim measures and attachments, maintenance, parentage and custody, claims brought by employees under a service or employment contract, non-contentious matters, urgent matters: HMK Art. 103) are not subject to it, so under HMK Art. 104 their deadlines are not extended. Administrative courts in places outside the city of their regional administrative court that have only one administrative or one tax court have no recess (İYUK Art. 61/1, 2nd sentence); choose “Judicial recess: Does not apply” for them. In criminal matters the Council of Judges and Prosecutors sets how investigations and detention cases are handled during the recess (CMK Art. 331/2–3); the tool applies the three-day extension of Art. 331/4 to criminal deadlines. Deadlines starting before 7 Jul 2013, when Law 6494 gave the recess rules their current form, are not computed. Eves and 28 October are holidays from 13:00 (Law 2429 Arts. 1–2); the procedural laws do not say how that half day affects a deadline, so by default the tool ends it on the eve. Administrative leave given to public employees is not a public holiday. Enforcement deadlines (İİK Art. 19) and deadlines in special laws are not covered. The public holiday list is updated each year from the Diyanet calendar.

FormulaLast day = service + period → recess extension if it ends in the recess → next working day if a holiday or weekendFor periods in days, the day of service or pronouncement is not counted (HMK Art. 92/1, CMK Art. 39/1, İYUK Art. 8/1). Periods in weeks, months or years end on the corresponding day of the last week, month or year, or on the month’s last day when it has none (HMK Art. 92/2, CMK Art. 39/2–3). Public holidays are part of the period, but a last day on a holiday moves to the next working day (HMK Art. 93, İYUK Art. 8/2, CMK Art. 39/4). Public offices are closed on Saturday and Sunday (Law 657 Art. 99). The judicial recess runs every year from 20 July to 31 August (HMK Art. 102, İYUK Art. 61, CMK Art. 331/1); a deadline ending in it is extended by one week from its end under HMK (Art. 104), by seven days from the day after it under İYUK (Art. 8/3) and by three days under CMK (Art. 331/4).
  1. Pick the deadline from the list, or enter the procedure, length and unit.
  2. Enter the date of service or pronouncement.
  3. Choose whether the matter is subject to the judicial recess.
  4. If the raw end falls in the recess the extension is added; a last day on a weekend or public holiday moves to the first working day.

Example

The istinaf appeal period is 2 weeks (HMK Art. 345). Served on Friday 8 March 2024, it ends on Friday 22 March 2024 at the close of working hours. Served on Friday 10 July 2026, the raw end of 24 July 2026 falls in the recess; it is extended by one week from 31 August 2026 and ends on Monday 7 September 2026.

Frequently asked questions

What if the deadline ends in the judicial recess?

In civil cases subject to the recess the deadline is extended by one week from 31 August, ending on 7 September (HMK Art. 104), or the next working day if that is a holiday. Administrative cases get seven days (İYUK Art. 8/3), criminal cases three (CMK Art. 331/4). No extension if the deadline ends after the recess.

What if the last day is a Saturday or a public holiday?

It ends at the close of working hours on the first working day after the holiday (HMK Art. 93). Public offices are closed on Saturday and Sunday (Law 657 Art. 99).

How long is the temyiz appeal period?

Two weeks from service of the regional court’s decision in civil cases (HMK Art. 361/1), two weeks from service of the reasoned judgment in criminal cases (CMK Art. 291/1), thirty days from service in administrative cases (İYUK Art. 46).

When does a deadline start for an e-notice?

An e-notice is deemed served at the end of the 5th day after it reaches the e-address; the deadline starts from then. The E-Notice Deadline Calculator works out both.
