How it is calculated

Smoking is paid for not only with health but also with money, as a steady expense that takes a large share of the budget. The World Health Organization (WHO) notes that tobacco use contributes to poverty by diverting household spending from basic needs such as food and shelter, and that this spending is hard to curb because tobacco is so addictive. According to WHO, tobacco kills more than 7 million people a year, including over 1.6 million non-smokers exposed to second-hand smoke, and there is no safe level of exposure. This calculator covers only the money spent buying cigarettes; it leaves out health costs and lost working time. Cigarette prices differ by brand and change often; this calculator uses no market price, and the ₺100 in the price field is only an example. Enter what you actually pay.

FormulaDaily = cigarettes a day ÷ cigarettes per pack × pack price · Yearly = daily × 365 · Monthly = yearly ÷ 12 · N years = yearly × NA year counts as 365 days and a month as a twelfth of a year (30.4 days on average). Cigarette packs in Türkiye hold 20. The estimate of past spending “at the prices of the time” adds up, for each month back from the latest CPI month, the monthly spend × CPI(that month) ÷ CPI(latest month).
  1. Divide the cigarettes you smoke a day by the cigarettes in a pack: the packs you smoke a day.
  2. Multiply by the pack price: what you spend a day.
  3. Multiply the daily spend by 365 for the year; divide that by 12 for the average month.
  4. Multiply the yearly spend by the number of years for the total. If you quit, that money stays unspent.

Example

With 15 cigarettes a day, packs of 20 and an example price of ₺100 a pack: 15 ÷ 20 × 100 = ₺75 a day; 75 × 365 = ₺27,375 a year; 27,375 ÷ 12 = ₺2,281.25 a month; ₺273,750 over 10 years.

Frequently asked questions

How much do I spend on cigarettes a year?

Divide the cigarettes you smoke a day by the number in a pack, then multiply by the pack price and by 365. Someone who smokes a pack a day buys 365 packs a year; at ₺100 a pack that is ₺36,500 a year.

Why isn’t the default pack price a real price?

Cigarette prices differ by brand and change often, and the calculator tracks no market price. The ₺100 in the field is therefore a round example, not any brand’s price. For a true result, enter today’s price of the pack you buy most.

How is my past spending worked out?

Two figures are shown. The one “at today’s price” applies today’s pack price to the past years; if cigarette prices rose in line with prices in general, that equals your past spending in today’s money. The one “at the prices of the time (estimate)” assumes the pack price rose at the same rate as TÜİK’s CPI general index and estimates the nominal money you actually paid in those years. Real cigarette prices can move differently from the CPI because of taxes and company price rises, so it is an approximation. No estimate is made for a period reaching back before the CPI series starts.

If I quit, will I have saved this money?

Only if you set the unspent amount aside. The calculation assumes the money is kept without interest and the pack price stays the same; interest, investment returns and future price rises are left out. To see how savings could grow with interest, use the savings calculator.

Where can I get help to quit smoking?

The Ministry of Health’s ALO 171 quit-smoking helpline is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; calls from landlines are free and mobile calls are charged at the operator’s rate. It calls back people who make a quit plan over a year and can book an appointment at a smoking cessation clinic, which can also be booked through the 182 Central Hospital Appointment System. According to WHO, counselling and medication can more than double the chance of quitting successfully; ask your doctor which approach suits you.

Why does a pack hold 20?

Under the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry’s regulation on the production and labelling of tobacco products, a unit pack of cigarettes contains 20 cigarettes. For a different pack bought abroad, change the field.
