How it is calculated
Body mass index is weight divided by height squared. It shows quickly whether an adult’s weight is in a healthy range. It cannot tell muscle from fat, so it can overstate in athletes and understate in older people; read it together with waist size and body fat.
VKİ = kilo (kg) ÷ boy² (m)Height is converted from centimetres to metres (174 cm → 1.74 m).- Convert height to metres and square it.
- Divide weight by that number.
- Round to one decimal place and compare with the WHO categories.
Example
For 174 cm and 72 kg: 72 ÷ (1.74 × 1.74) = 23.8. The value is between 18.5 and 25, so it is in the healthy weight category.
Frequently asked questions
What is a normal BMI?
For adults the World Health Organization treats 18.5 up to (but not including) 25 as healthy. 25–30 is overweight and 30 or more is obesity.
Is BMI read the same way for children?
No. Under 18 the adult categories do not apply; BMI is compared with WHO growth charts for age and sex. This calculator is for adults.
Can BMI be misleading for athletes?
Yes. Muscle is denser than fat, so muscular people can have a high BMI. Body fat percentage is a better measure for them.
