How it is calculated
Two rates get mixed up in pricing. Margin is profit’s share of the selling price; markup is what is added to the cost. The same percentage as a margin gives a higher price, since a 30% margin means adding 42.86% to cost. The table shows the price at other rates and each margin as a markup. VAT is added on the price (VAT Law 3065 Art. 20) at the rate set under Art. 28; pick the rate for what you sell.
By margin: Price = Cost ÷ (1 − Margin); by markup: Price = Cost × (1 + Markup); with VAT = Price × (1 + VAT rate)VAT rates come from the registry: standard 20%, reduced 10% and 1%. VAT is charged on the price before VAT.Example
For a 30% margin on a ₺100 cost the price is 100 ÷ 0.70 = ₺142.86; a 30% markup gives ₺130. With 20% VAT, ₺142.86 × 1.20 = ₺171.43.
Frequently asked questions
Is adding 30% to cost a 30% margin?
No. Adding 30% to ₺100 gives ₺130 and ₺30 profit, a margin of 30 ÷ 130 = 23.08%. A 30% margin needs 100 ÷ 0.70 = ₺142.86.
How do I turn a margin into a markup?
Markup = Margin ÷ (1 − Margin). A 20% margin is 0.20 ÷ 0.80 = 25% markup; 50% margin is 100% markup. The other way, Margin = Markup ÷ (1 + Markup).
Is the margin taken on the price with VAT?
No, on the price before VAT. The VAT collected is not the seller’s revenue: find the net price first, then add VAT.
