How it is calculated

A time difference is not fixed: countries change their clocks on different dates, so the difference between two cities can change by an hour during the year and differ for a few weeks around the changes. Turkey has not moved its clocks back since 2016 (Decision 2016/9154), so it is 2 hours ahead of central Europe in winter and 1 hour in summer (3 and 2 hours ahead of London). Some countries, such as India (UTC+5:30) and Iran (UTC+3:30), use half-hour zones.

FormulaDifference = second city’s UTC offset − first city’s UTC offset; Time = end − start (+ 24 h if the end is earlier) − breakUTC offsets are read from the IANA time zone database at noon UTC on the chosen date. Between two times, an end earlier than the start means the period runs past midnight.
  1. The two cities’ UTC offsets on that date are found (daylight saving included).
  2. The difference is given in hours and minutes; plus means the second city is ahead.
  3. Every day of the year is checked and the periods with a different difference are listed in the table.

Frequently asked questions

What is the time difference between Turkey and Germany?

Germany is 2 hours behind Turkey in winter and 1 hour behind during summer time (end of March to end of October).

How is a shift past midnight counted?

In “between two times”, enter an end earlier than the start (e.g. 22:00 – 06:00); the time runs into the next day: 8 hours.

What are decimal hours for?

Hourly pay and timesheets use decimal hours: 7 h 45 min is 7.75 hours. Multiply it by the hourly rate to get the pay.
