How it is calculated

A life table shows the probabilities of dying by age and sex and the measures derived from them (the number of survivors at each age, the life expectancy at each age). TÜİK produces Türkiye’s single-age life table every year from the last three years of population and death records (the Address-Based Population Registration System and MERNİS), as a moving average; foreign nationals living in the country are excluded. In the 2023-2025 table, life expectancy at birth is 78.5 years: 75.9 for men and 81.1 for women; a 65-year-old man can expect 16.7 more years and a woman 20. These are period life table values: the average for a hypothetical generation exposed all its life to the age-specific death rates of that period. If death rates change in future, the average actually lived will differ. So the result is not a personal forecast of your lifespan but a summary of today’s mortality for people of your age and sex. Because we found no verifiable coefficients that adjust lifespan in years for personal risk factors such as smoking, body weight or chronic disease and that can be applied to Türkiye’s life table, this calculator makes no such adjustment.

FormulaAverage age expected to be reached = x + e(x)x: age in completed years. e(x): in TÜİK’s life table, the average number of years lived after exact age x. e(0): life expectancy at birth.
  1. Take your age in completed years (your age at your last birthday); TÜİK defines age the same way.
  2. In the column for your sex (or the total of both sexes for “Both”), read e(x) on the row for your age. Ages 100 and over share one “100+” row.
  3. That value is the remaining life expectancy; added to your age, it gives the average age expected to be reached.
  4. For comparison, the age-0 row of the same column is the life expectancy at birth.

Example

For a 30-year-old man, the table gives e(30) = 47.8 years, so the average age expected to be reached is 30 + 47.8. That is above the life expectancy at birth for men, 75.9 years, because someone who has reached 30 has already come through the risks of dying before that age.

Frequently asked questions

Does the result show how long I will live?

No. It shows how many more years people of your age and sex live on average at the death rates of 2023-2025. Your own health, lifestyle, genes and environment are not taken into account; one person’s lifespan can be very different from the average.

Why is the age expected to be reached higher than life expectancy at birth?

Life expectancy at birth is an average that includes those who die in infancy and youth. Someone who has reached a given age has already come through those risks, so age plus remaining life expectancy is above the figure at birth and grows with age.

Why are smoking, weight or exercise not included?

We found no verifiable coefficients that state, in a form applicable to one person and combinable with Türkiye’s life table, how many years these factors change lifespan; adding unsourced “−5 years, +3 years” adjustments would mislead. Ask your doctor about your own risks.

How big is the gap between women and men?

In the 2023-2025 table, life expectancy at birth is 81.1 years for women and 75.9 for men. The gap narrows with age: at 65, remaining life expectancy is 20 years for women and 16.7 for men.

When is the data updated?

TÜİK publishes life tables once a year, for a period covering the last three years. The table used here is from the Life Tables, 2023-2025 bulletin of 29 Jul 2026; TÜİK has announced the next bulletin for July 2027. The values are updated when it comes out.

Do education or my province make a difference?

In the same bulletin TÜİK reports that, for ages 30 and over, life expectancy rises with education level, and it produces life expectancy at birth by province every three years. This calculator uses only the single-age table for Türkiye as a whole.
