ÖSYM YDS and YÖKDİL guides: ÖSYM / YÖK / ÜAK
Minimum scores set by regulation
How it is calculated
The YDS (Foreign Language Level Assessment Exam) and its electronic version e-YDS set the foreign-language level of public employees; universities, public bodies and specialty exams also use the results. The YÖKDİL is held under a protocol between YÖK and ÖSYM, for the language requirement of higher education institutions, in science, health and social science versions. Both have 80 multiple-choice questions, only correct answers count and the count becomes a score out of 100. The minimums are set not by the exam but by the rules that use it: the Doçentlik Regulation, art. 4(2)(b), asks for at least 55 in a central language exam, and the Graduate Education Regulation, art. 16(5), at least 55 for PhD admission; research assistant and lecturer posts need at least 50, lecturers teaching a foreign language at least 85. University senates may raise these. Validity is set by the body that uses the result: 5 years for the foreign-language allowance (Decree-Law 375, art. 2), 5 years for TUS, DUS and EUS placement (a YDS in English, French or German for TUS and DUS, in English for EUS); a YÖKDİL result counts 5 years for graduate study and prep-year exemption and without limit for teaching posts and doçentlik.
Score = correct answers × 100 ÷ valid questions (with 80 questions, 1.25 per correct answer)Only correct answers count; wrong and blank answers do not change the score. There are 80 valid questions; if ÖSYM or a court cancels any, they are taken out and the remaining questions’ value is set again (guide, 3.8).- Enter your correct answers; the wrong-answer count only shows the blanks.
- The score is the correct answers on a 100-point scale: with 80 questions, 1.25 each.
- In the YDS and e-YDS the score falls into level A (90–100), B, C, D or E (50–59) under article 11 of the Foreign Language Level Assessment Regulation.
- The table lists the regulatory minimums and the correct answers each needs.
Example
58 correct, 14 wrong: 58 × 100 ÷ 80 = 72.5, level (C). The 55 needed for associate professorship takes 44 correct answers (44 × 1.25 = 55). Had one question been cancelled, it would be 58 × 100 ÷ 79 = 73.42.
Frequently asked questions
Do wrong answers cancel correct ones in the YDS?
No. Under the YDS, e-YDS and YÖKDİL guides only correct answers count and wrong answers are ignored, so leaving a question blank has no advantage.
How many points is one correct answer worth?
The correct answers are scaled to 100, so with 80 questions each is worth 1.25. If a question is cancelled the score is divided over the rest; with 79 valid questions one correct answer is about 1.266 points.
What are the YDS levels (A, B, C, D, E)?
Under article 11 of the Foreign Language Level Assessment Regulation: 90–100 (A), 80–89 (B), 70–79 (C), 60–69 (D) and 50–59 (E). They are used for the foreign-language allowance of public employees; which level is paid what is set by other rules. The bands are whole numbers; when a question is cancelled a score such as 89.87 can fall between two bands. The regulation does not say which level such a score belongs to, so the tool assigns none; ÖSYM states the level on the result document. These letters are not the CEFR levels A1–C2.
What YDS score does associate professorship need?
Article 4(2)(b) of the Doçentlik Regulation asks for at least 55 in a central language exam set by YÖK, or an equivalent score in an international exam YÖK accepts. If the field is about a particular language, the exam is taken in another language.
Is YÖKDİL scored differently from the YDS?
The scoring is the same: both have 80 questions, only correct answers count and the count is scaled to 100. The difference is the use: the A–E levels and the TUS, DUS, EUS language rule in the guide are written for the YDS; YÖKDİL serves higher-education language requirements.
What is the IELTS or TOEFL equivalent of a YDS score?
The official equivalents are in the tables of ÖSYM’s Board decision on foreign-language exam equivalences (YDS guide, 1.9). This page does not use that table; the score-to-CEFR charts online are not official.
