Score types and test weights (2026-DUS 2. Dönem guide 4.2) 2

How it is calculated

The Dental Specialty Training Entrance Exam (DUS) is the professional-knowledge exam ÖSYM holds under the Regulation on Specialty Training in Medicine and Dentistry (art. 12). One session has two tests: the 40-question Basic Sciences Test (anatomy, histology, physiology, biochemistry, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, biology and genetics) and the 80-question Clinical Sciences Test (eight dental specialties) (2026-DUS 2. Dönem guide, Table 1). Scoring is in section 4.2: each test gives a net, the nets become standard scores with the session’s mean and SD, and the two standard scores are weighted into the K and T score types. The guide gives no further conversion formula. Choosing programmes needs a DUS score of at least 45 (5.5). Dentists with a doctorate also sit DUS to become specialists; their score is compared with the five-year average of the lowest placement scores in their specialty and is not ranked with the others. ÖSYM does not publish the DUS test means and SDs; its “numerical information” only gives the lowest and highest placement scores per programme. The page therefore computes the nets exactly and makes no score estimate. One thing is exact: since the test statistics are computed over the candidates sitting DUS for specialty training (4.2, p. 25), if everyone in that group took both tests, the group’s K and T scores average 50, because the weights add up to 1; dentists with a doctorate are not in that group.

FormulaNet = C − W ÷ 4 · Standard score = 50 + 10 × (net − mean) ÷ SD · K = 0.4 × SS(Basic) + 0.6 × SS(Clinical) · T = 0.6 × SS(Basic) + 0.4 × SS(Clinical)C is the number of correct, W of wrong answers; blanks do not count. The mean and SD are computed from the nets, in that test, of the candidates who sat DUS for specialty training in that session (dentists with a doctorate are left out). SS is the standard score.
  1. In each test, a quarter of the wrong answers is taken from the correct ones: the net (raw score). The Basic Sciences Test has 40 and the Clinical Sciences Test 80 questions, in one 150-minute session.
  2. Each net becomes a standard score with mean 50 and SD 10, using the session’s test mean and SD.
  3. The two standard scores are added with the weights in section 4.2 of the guide (p. 24): the K (clinical) and T (basic) scores. Oral Pathology places by T, every other specialty by K.
  4. ÖSYM does not publish the session’s test means and SDs, so the standard scores and the K and T scores cannot be computed in advance; the page stops at the nets.

Example

Basic Sciences 28 correct, 8 wrong: net 28 − 8 ÷ 4 = 26. Clinical Sciences 55 correct, 15 wrong: net 55 − 3.75 = 51.25. Of the 120 questions, 14 are blank.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions does DUS have?

The Basic Sciences Test has 40 and the Clinical Sciences Test 80 questions, answered together in one 150-minute session (2026-DUS 2. Dönem guide, 1.3 and Table 1). The split by subject is approximate.

Do wrong answers cost points in DUS?

Yes, four wrong answers cancel one correct answer: in each test a quarter of the wrong answers is subtracted from the correct ones. Blanks do not affect the net (2026-DUS 2. Dönem guide, 4.2).

Is the K or the T score used?

Oral Pathology places by the T score (0.6 basic + 0.4 clinical), every other dental specialty by the K score (0.4 basic + 0.6 clinical) (2026-DUS 2. Dönem guide, 4.2).

How many points is a given net worth?

There is no fixed answer. The standard score depends on that session’s test mean and SD; since ÖSYM does not publish them, no net can be turned into a score in advance. Online net-to-score tables are not ÖSYM values.

What is the DUS threshold?

To choose programmes, the DUS score used for placement must be at least 45 (2026-DUS 2. Dönem guide, 5.5). For candidates still in specialty training and in the other cases of section 1.7, that score is reduced by 0.05 times the score (Regulation art. 13/3; raised from 2% to 5% by the amendment in Official Gazette no. 32548 of 16.5.2024).
