MEB driving-course e-exam guide: MEB (ÖDSGM)

How it is calculated

The theory exam of driving courses is held on computers in e-exam centres by MEB’s directorate for measurement, evaluation and exams. Under the regulation there is one exam for all theory subjects, marked out of 100 as a single score, and 70 or more passes (Driving Courses Regulation art. 28(1)). The guide’s Table 1 gives the same split for every class (M, A1, A2, A, B1, B, F and G): 12 first aid, 23 traffic and environment, 9 vehicle technology and 6 traffic etiquette questions in 45 minutes. Each question has four options. The score is the share of correct answers times 100; all questions are worth the same and wrong answers are ignored (guide, section 10), so answering every question never costs you. A trainee who fails may sit the exam three more times in a row without attending the course again or paying the course fee; the last attempt must be booked within 90 days of the start of the course group (art. 15(1)). After four failed attempts the trainee must enrol again (art. 15(5)). However, a trainee who could not sit an exam because of illness (medical report within 2 working days), a disaster, the serious illness or death of their own or their spouse’s first-degree relative, or representing the country, and handed the document to the course within 10 days, may sit a one-time excuse exam if still unsuccessful after the four attempts (art. 15(3)(a)). Passing the theory exam opens the driving lessons.

FormulaScore = correct answers ÷ questions × 100The exam has 12 first aid, 23 traffic and environment, 9 vehicle technology and 6 traffic etiquette questions. Every question is worth the same; wrong answers do not affect the score.
  1. The correct answers in the four subjects are added up.
  2. The total is divided by the number of questions and multiplied by 100.
  3. A score of 70 or more passes. A trainee who fails sits the exam again paying only the exam fee, without attending the course again; there are 4 attempts at the theory exam in all.

Example

First aid 10, traffic and environment 18, vehicle technology 6, traffic etiquette 5 correct: 39 in all. Score 39 ÷ 50 × 100 = 78, a pass.

Frequently asked questions

How many correct answers do I need to pass?

The pass mark is 70 out of 100. All questions are worth the same, so you need at least 70% of them right: with the 2026 guide’s 50 questions each is worth 2 points and you need at least 35 correct answers.

Do wrong answers cancel correct ones?

No. Under the guide only correct answers count and wrong answers are ignored, so a wrong answer and a blank give the same result.

Does the subject split depend on the licence class?

No. The guide’s Table 1 gives the same split “in all certificate classes”: 12 first aid, 23 traffic and environment, 9 vehicle technology, 6 traffic etiquette.

How many attempts do I get, and how long must I wait after failing?

There are 4 attempts in all: the first exam and three more in a row. The regulation sets no waiting time between exams; the booking system gives the nearest date. The last attempt must be booked within 90 days of your course group’s start. A booked exam missed without an accepted excuse also uses up an attempt. If you missed an exam for a documented reason (a medical report, a disaster, the serious illness or death of a first-degree relative, representing the country) and handed the document to the course in time, you may sit a one-time excuse exam if you still fail after all four attempts (art. 15(3)(a)).

Is the driving test part of this score?

No. The driving test comes after the theory exam and is scored on the road with assessment forms (art. 28(2)); this page covers the theory e-exam only.
