ÖSYM DİB-MBSTS guide: ÖSYM
Approximate questions per subject (2026-DİB-MBSTS guide)
How it is calculated
ÖSYM runs the Professional Knowledge Level Exam (DİB-MBSTS) for the Presidency of Religious Affairs. Under the 2026-DİB-MBSTS guide it is a single test of 60 multiple-choice questions on Qur’an knowledge, tafsir, creed and kalam, fiqh and ilmihal, hadith, the Prophet’s life and Islamic history, history of religions and of Islamic schools, lasting 90 minutes; the guide’s questions per subject are approximate. The guide has no separate tests by title or post group. Only correct answers count: the number correct is the raw score. Raw scores become standard scores with the session’s mean and SD, and standard scores become the exam score so that the lowest is 20 and the highest 100. Combined, the two steps leave only the session’s lowest and highest raw scores: the top scorer gets 100, the lowest 20, and everyone else falls in between linearly in their number of correct answers. ÖSYM does not publish those two values; its DİB-MBSTS statistics documents (the latest 2018-DİB-MBSTS) give candidate counts only. So the raw score is exact and the exam score cannot be estimated. The guide sets no pass mark either: the Presidency sets and announces the application conditions and the score a post, exam or transfer requires; for example, the 2024 internal transfer entrance exam notice asked for “at least 50 (fifty) points” in any of the 2022, 2023 or 2024 MBSTS.
Raw score (RS) = correct answers · SS = 50 + 10 × (RS − mean) ÷ SD · Exam score = 20 + (100 − 20) × (SS − lowest SS) ÷ (highest SS − lowest SS)The mean and SD are those of the raw scores of the session’s candidates; the lowest and highest SS are the session’s lowest and highest standard scores. Wrong and blank answers do not affect the score.- The raw score is the number of correct answers; the test has 60 questions and wrong answers are ignored.
- ÖSYM turns the raw scores into standard scores with mean 50 and SD 10, using the session’s mean and SD.
- The standard scores are moved to the exam score so that the lowest is 20 and the highest 100. Because the standard score is a linear function of the raw score, the mean and SD cancel out when the two steps are combined: exam score = 20 + (100 − 20) × (raw score − lowest raw score) ÷ (highest raw score − lowest raw score).
- The session’s lowest and highest raw scores are not published, so the last step cannot be done here; the page stops at the raw score.
Example
42 correct, 10 wrong, 8 blank: raw score 42 (wrong answers are not deducted), share correct 42 ÷ 60 = 70%. If, say, the session’s lowest raw score were 5 and the highest 58, the exam score would be 20 + 80 × (42 − 5) ÷ (58 − 5) = 75.85; these two values are chosen only to illustrate the formula.
Frequently asked questions
Do wrong answers cost points in the DİB-MBSTS?
No. Under the guide only correct answers count and wrong answers are ignored; the raw score is the number correct. Answering instead of leaving a question blank never lowers the score.
How many questions, and how are they split by subject?
One test, 60 questions, 90 minutes. The guide’s approximate split: Fiqh and ilmihal 20; Qur’an knowledge, tafsir, creed and kalam, hadith, and the Prophet’s life and Islamic history about 7 each; history of religions 2, history of Islamic schools 3. The guide also lists the source books the questions are drawn from.
How many points is a given number of correct answers worth?
It depends on the session. Score = 20 + (100 − 20) × (your correct answers − the session’s lowest) ÷ (highest − lowest). The session’s highest and lowest numbers of correct answers are not published, so the score for a given count cannot be known in advance; the top scorer always gets 100.
What is the pass mark?
The ÖSYM guide sets no pass mark. The Presidency of Religious Affairs states in its own announcements which score a post, exam or transfer requires (for example, the 2024 internal transfer entrance exam notice: at least 50 points in one of the 2022–2024 MBSTS); for application conditions, too, the guide refers to the Presidency.
